In 1999, Weimar was made a European Cultural City – the German National Theatre was renovated for this occasion. The difficult part was the monument protection stipulation that no significant constructional changes were permitted. However, the MENERGA engineers succeeded in integrating the advanced air conditioning systems into the existing technical plant rooms. The Adsolair family of units were used for "cold" and heat recovery, equipped with an environmentally friendly summer cooling unit that operates by evaporating water.
